Opportunites for Gifted Students

I hope everybody has had a great second week of school.  The purpose of this post is to make you aware of a few opportunities for gifted or high ability students.

• The Math Science Innovation Center will offer Math Masters II for 5th grade students who are identified gifted.  Math Masters challenges students to explore complex mathematical puzzles and to engage in problem-solving of real-world situations through a mathematical lens. Using a variety of materials and computer programs, students spend three Saturdays immersed in rigorous mathematics activities, working in groups communicating ideas and strategies. Students explore the creative side of mathematics as they dive into problems with a different theme each Saturday.  Math Masters will take place on Oct. 25, Nov.1, and Nov 8 this year.  Students will be selected through an application process.  Parents and students can obtain an application through Mrs. Robyn Green, CREATE resource teacher, or by clicking on the following link: http://tinyurl.com/n9lyj8p  .  Application must be returned to Mrs. Green by Sept. 25.

• The Math Science Innovation Center will also offer the Discoverers Program for 4 and 5th grade students this fall.  This program allows students to look more in depth at science, technology, and mathematics topics.  Students select the course that piques their interest and attend that class for three consecutive Saturdays. Courses may have guest speakers, field trips, hands-on problem solving, and design-and-build stations. Participants get to experiment, explore and discover how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fit into the world around them! The one thing common in all the classes is fun!  This program is held simultaneously at the MSiC campus and Harrowgate Elementary School and will take place on Oct. 25, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8. Christin Martin is a gifted resource teacher at the Middle School who also teaches a 6th grade honors math class.  She recently created an outstanding class website.  Her website will replace her monthly newsletter and will serve as a valuable resource for class related information, as well gifted opportunities in general.  Parents can access the webpage at: www.mrsmartinsmathclass.shutterfly.com

Camp Innovation with The Math Science Innovation Center

Camp Innovation is the MathScience Innovation Center’s (MSiC) largest student program. This program offers classes for students going into 4th grade all the way to 9th grade.  Each summer over 1,000 students participate in week-long classes with a wide range of  topics like biology, ecology, robotics, advanced mathematical functions, computer programming, and even more!  Packed with adventure, creativity, exploration and design; each class offers students an opportunity to dive more deeply into a myriad 21st century topics.  New extended day programs allow students to engage in additional after-camp classes for those who want an added afternoon adventure. Also new for 2014 are three full-day classes!  Colonial Heights parents and students will be happy to know that some classes this summer will be offered at Harrowgate Elementary School and John Tyler Community College.  Click on the following link for detailed class descriptions and registration information:  http://mymsic.org/en/saturday-summer/campinnovation
