Welcome to the 2015-16 School year. I met with the Gifted Advisory Committee officers yesterday to discuss plans for the year. Please see the Committee meeting dates below. Please note that all meetings take place at 7:00 pm in the AV room at the Colonial Heights Technical Center.
Monday, October 19
Tuesday, January 19
Monday, March 21
May TBD if needed
I would also like to call your attention to the ap, "Remind." Remind is an ap that provides subscribers with information and reminders in the form of short text messages. I think this might be an additional way to keep parents and teachers better informed about opportunities available to gifted and high ability students. You can subscribe to the ap by texting to number 81010. Write @giftedser as the message.
I also want to extend a warm welcome to Amber Underhill and Glenice Burchard who agreed to join the GAC this year. Their nominations will be reviewed by the School Board next week. Please join me in welcoming them to the group.
Opportunities Available to Gifted & High Ability Students
The Discoverers 4-5 Program allows students to work in depth with
science, technology, and mathematics topics. Fourth and fifth grade
students select the topic that piques their interest and attend that
class for three consecutive Saturdays. Classes are taught by MSiC
educators, K-12, university and community leaders. All classes are
inquiry-based and have significant “hands-on”, group work and
problem-solving embedded. Classes may also have guest speakers, field
trips, and design-and-build stations as part of the enrichment as
students experiment, explore and discover how science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) fit into the world around them. Detailed information is available at:
